We took some time today to get into all the goodies Miles got for his birthday. Unsurprisingly, he was most drawn to the thing that involves hurling axes through the living room. Again, eternal thanks to Jacques for that one.

Year 5, Day 1: Miles’s Fourth Birthday Party!
Miles's big Fourth Birthday Weekend has arrived, and his friends (and ours) once again came out to celebrate. Miles's friend Audrey came into town last night. They were happy to see each other. Last year, we had a small celebration (several, actually) due to the pandemic, but today marked Miles's first full-fledged "destination birthday" since … Continue reading Year 5, Day 1: Miles’s Fourth Birthday Party!
Year 4, Day 339
Following an exciting afternoon of being driven around in a limo and drinking wine, Jaclyn went to bed pretty early last night. Good thing too, because it left Miles and me free to prepare her birthday gifts. Specifically, we needed to fill out the cards (plural) that Miles insisted on getting her. "Okay, buddy," I … Continue reading Year 4, Day 339
Year 4, Day 326
"Daddy, can I ask you something?" Miles said as he was on the cusp of falling asleep. "Sure, buddy." "Can Santa come back to our house? Because I wanted him to leave presents under my tree." Since we were back at my parents' house for the holidays, Santa and rerouted all of Miles's presents to … Continue reading Year 4, Day 326
Year 4, Day 324
Miles went all-in on ice cream this year for Christmas. While he asked Santa for "an ice cream truck," he received not only a small toy truck, but a play ice cream shop counter, an actual ice cream maker, and a play ice cream cart, which I've admittedly been putting off building for a few … Continue reading Year 4, Day 324
Year 4, Day 304: Christmas 2021 In Review
As improbable as it might seem, Christmas Day actually started at a respectable hour (7 AM) for us, thanks in no small part to Miles not falling asleep until after 1:00 the night before. He was eager to get to the living room and see what Santa had left for him, but he didn't really … Continue reading Year 4, Day 304: Christmas 2021 In Review
Year 4, Day 300
Well, Miles is still waking up in the night, but at least 1) he doesn't lead off with the banging and screaming, opting instead to attempt to get our attention in a more controlled voice and 2) "the middle of the night" is now more like "really early in the morning." Four consecutive hours of … Continue reading Year 4, Day 300
Year 4, Day 286
Every year around the holidays, as all Amazon Echo owners know, our Amazonian helpmate Alexa will cease to notify us of the contents of delivered packages, lest she inadvertently spoil a Christmas surprise. It's a small detail, but I've always appreciated it, given how many of the gifts I buy for Miles and Jaclyn come … Continue reading Year 4, Day 286
Year 4, Day 115
My Father's Day started out like this... Miles was beyond excited to deliver my gifts. ...and while this happened mid morning... ...by late morning, our plans had been a bit upended by this: What you're looking at there are the TEETH MARKS that Miles left in the hardwood floor when he slipped, fell, and face-planted. … Continue reading Year 4, Day 115
Year 4, Day 71
Miles excitedly stepped out of daycare this afternoon to greet Jaclyn at pick-up. "Happy Mother's Day!" he said proudly, holding out the gifts he had acquired and/or created for her. Jaclyn's heart was warmed, and Miles reveled in her joy for just a moment before declaring that he wanted the gifts back.
