Miles got to spend some time with his aunt and (soon to be official) uncle this evening. He may still be warming up to their dog, Pickles, but he has discovered an immediate interest in basketball!

Year 2, Day 12
Of all the gifts Miles received for his birthday, perhaps the largest was the ball pit he received from Aunt Andrea and Uncle Scott. This nightmare apparatus has remained safely housed in its box all week, but when I woke up this morning, I found that Jaclyn had already set about preparing it for use. … Continue reading Year 2, Day 12
Year 2, Day 8
You know what's worse than taking care of a sick baby? Taking care of a sick baby while you, yourself, are also sick. This is the situation Jaclyn and I have found ourselves in for the last week, and while Miles seems to be almost back to normal now, we've only gotten perpetually sicker. Even when … Continue reading Year 2, Day 8
Year 2, Day 2
Advance warning, and I do apologize for this -- this post gets moderately racist due to a particular anecdote from my childhood. When I was a kid, my dad threw the term "Jap bastard" around a lot. Not in reference to actual Japanese people, whom as near as I can tell my dad had no … Continue reading Year 2, Day 2
Day 304: Christmas in Review
As loathe as I am to put words in my son's mouth, it would appear by any relevant measure that Miles's first Christmas was a rousing success. While he appeared, at times, overwhelmed, the hours upon hours spent receiving gifts and tributes ultimately led to his well-earned acceptance of his extended family members. He … Continue reading Day 304: Christmas in Review
Day 281
One might consider concluding a trip that saw such misfortune as ours as quickly as possible, but we had one more stop to make on our way home. Instead of heading straight back to Charlotte, we traveled southeast towards our nation's capital to visit with my uncle, aunt, and cousin. Since Miles first joined us … Continue reading Day 281
Day 278: Baby’s First Funeral
The initial reason we came to Rochester this week was for a wedding, but fate can lead us in unexpected directions. Jaclyn's grandmother passed away on Thanksgiving, which suddenly meant that this trip was going to involve another, more somber family event. Miles is a relatively happy kid and he obviously had zero context for … Continue reading Day 278: Baby’s First Funeral
Day 275
Miles is a good enough traveler; he just gets a little testy after being in the car for a couple hours (but then, find someone who doesn't). That being said, it was clear by the end of our return trip from Myrtle Beach on Sunday that he had about had it with excessive traveling. And … Continue reading Day 275
Day 270: Baby’s First Thanksgiving!
We arrived back in Myrtle Beach late last night for the holiday weekend. I knew that Miles wasn't going to be able to really get the most out of his very first Thanksgiving, but there enough generally pureed dishes (mostly centered around potatoes of one sort or another) that he was at least able to … Continue reading Day 270: Baby’s First Thanksgiving!
Day 161
Today, Jaclyn and Miles headed down to Rock Hill, SC to pick up a travel car seat from our friends Jacques and Madeline. As much as I would've liked to go with them, I'm still recovering from the last few days, so all I could do was say, "Drive safely," and see them on their … Continue reading Day 161
