We went out for lunch today, and Miles insisted that these would be the sitting arrangements: Yes, I was ordered to sit at a completely different table with my back to my family. But hey, I'll do whatever it takes for him to eat his lunch without a fuss.

Year 4, Day 122
Today, through both a oceanside memorial and a celebration of life, we gathered to say goodbye to Jaclyn's father John. Some of the people in attendance were family and friends of mine that I haven't seen since at least before COVID dropped, if not far longer. Any one of these things would've made the day … Continue reading Year 4, Day 122
Year 4, Day 121
Sometime earlier in the week, probably Wednesday, we started talking to Miles about our weekend plans. Specifically, we were heading to Myrtle Beach for a beachside memorial in honor of Jaclyn's father, after which we'd have a party in his memory. We'd be staying with my parents, and my brother and his wife -- whom … Continue reading Year 4, Day 121
Year 4, Day 84
It's hard to explain death to a child. Miles is still figuring out what it means to exist; trying to rationalize ceasing to exist is impossible (not that it's much easier for adults, in all fairness). But this is where we've found ourselves this week, as Miles's Papa passed away this morning. Jaclyn left early … Continue reading Year 4, Day 84
Year 4, Day 73
We went out for brunch at a nearby spot (Cafe 100) this morning to celebrate Mother's Day, and despite Miles's tendency towards acting like a fool out in public lately, we actually had a great, relaxing meal! And...yeah...Miles acted like a fool a bit too. But at least we were outside!
Year 4, Day 3: Miles’s Third Birthday – Part 3
Miles enjoyed his third (?!) consecutive day of birthday celebrations today with a tiny soiree involving a select few invitees and what is frankly the most amazing cake I've ever seen. It's humbling in the sense that I will never be this good at ANYTHING. The exclusive guest list included Miles's aunt and uncle... ...and … Continue reading Year 4, Day 3: Miles’s Third Birthday – Part 3
Year 4, Day 2: Miles’s Third Birthday – Part 2
It's been over a year now since we last drove to Myrtle Beach to see my parents, and while video chat has helped keep my parents in Miles's life, we thought that we would make a quick trip down for his birthday. Despite the eight hours of driving it meant for me today, everyone was … Continue reading Year 4, Day 2: Miles’s Third Birthday – Part 2
Year 3, Day 327
Fatherhood (and heck, MARRIAGE) isn't easy, but man...I'm a pretty lucky guy.
Year 3, Day 311
Last night, Jaclyn issued the following proposal: "I'm going to bring Miles into our bed tomorrow morning and he can just watch TV while we lay around." "Sounds great," I said. It should come as no surprise that, while Miles was brought to our bed upon waking up this morning, he did not do so … Continue reading Year 3, Day 311
Year 3, Day 305: Christmas 2020 in Review
For a holiday spent in isolation, Miles's third Christmas managed to be frenetic, loud, and (fortunately) filled with joy. Christmas started early in our house, as Miles woke up at 3 AM and started yelling, "DADDY! I WANNA READ A BOOK, DADDY!" Groaning, I staggered down the hallway to his bedroom and immediately began pleading … Continue reading Year 3, Day 305: Christmas 2020 in Review
