I was prepared to write about Miles's second-ever trip to the dentist today, but then he had to go and start standing and walking (a couple steps at daycare today, but hey -- progress is progress!) unaided!

Year 2, Day 127
Miles returned to daycare today, and it honestly feels strange going through my day without him now. Our trip to Boston marked the longest sustained time I've spent with Miles since the two weeks after he was born, and it's crazy to me to reflect on just how much he seemed to grow in that … Continue reading Year 2, Day 127
Year 2, Day 80
I filled in for a trivia show tonight and, sadly, missed another important touchstone in Miles's development as a human being -- he has now tried french fries. And by all accounts, he loves them.
Year 2, Day 79
After excitedly telling Miles's daycare about his encouraging walking progress this week, they shared a video with us today so we could get a glimpse of how well he's been doing with them. I'm not sharing it here since other children are in the video, but it involves Miles holding onto a walker and stepping … Continue reading Year 2, Day 79
Year 2, Day 66
It's obvious, just from reflecting on my own tendencies over the years, that children pick up a lot from their parents, from emotional responses to physical tics and behaviors. And yet, at least once a day Miles will do something that I can't help but wonder as to the origin of, as it clearly isn't … Continue reading Year 2, Day 66
Year 2, Day 65
Within the last few weeks, Miles has grown both increasingly adept at and interested in opening cabinets and drawers. While the protective locks on the kitchen cabinets have made this an unfulfilling pursuit for him, he has found better success with other such installations. Oftentimes, we don't even realize he's been in a drawer until … Continue reading Year 2, Day 65
Year 2, Day 62
OMG. YOU GUYS. TODAY MILES GAVE ME A KISS ON THE CHEEK. THIS SWEET KID IS THE GREATEST.
Year 2, Day 23
I don't exactly know what I expected the cognitive development of a baby to look like in observable terms, but seeing how Miles interacts with the world is always surprising. This week, he's started playing with one of his new toys -- one of those wooden boxes with shapes cut out of it and various … Continue reading Year 2, Day 23
Year 2, Day 13
There's a real nature vs. nurture struggle going on in our household currently. I'm content to let Miles develop at a pace he's comfortable with. Jaclyn, meanwhile, has her own ideas about deadlines for developmental milestones. One such idea that she has decided to make manifest this weekend is weaning Miles off of his bottles … Continue reading Year 2, Day 13
Day 336
The good news: After only just beginning PT, Miles is already lifting himself to a seated position independently. The bad news: He's trying to do so under a chair.
