With both his Santa visit AND the bulk of our shopping behind us, Miles has now, like Moses descending Mt. Sinai, handed down his Christmas list. At least his expression meets the moment. And the "little bit" naughty descriptor suggests a degree of self-awareness and, hopefully, penitence.

Year 5, Day 188
For a long time, Miles has pleaded and bargained with me not to leave his room at bedtime. "You can sleep here!" he'll say, or "I have a bed!" and "I'll make room for you!" or sometimes, simply, "Stay!" Only recently, however, has his bargaining become a bit more shrewd. I'll almost always lie next … Continue reading Year 5, Day 188
Year 5, Day 157
Miles's love of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is well documented. I get it, I love them too. I've got a big soft spot tracing back to my younger days for those storied heroes in a half-shell. But there are different degrees of fandom. Some people buy toys, posters, games, and other products adorned with … Continue reading Year 5, Day 157
Year 5, Day 146
As I was on my way out the door for trivia last night, Miles walked over to me with a special request. "Hey, you got poop in your mouth and poop on your face," he said. Then, clarifying that he wasn't talking about me specifically, "Tell someone that." "What, tell that to someone at trivia?" … Continue reading Year 5, Day 146
Year 4, Day 315
Today was a day I didn't even know I needed to dread yet, as I assumed it was still at least three or four years away. Miles, in all earnestness, requested his own cell phone. "I want to get a real phone so I can talk to somebody," he said, unsolicited, as we pulled up … Continue reading Year 4, Day 315
Year 4, Day 160
I'll be waiting forever for the "easy" part of parenting a toddler to show up, but nothing on any given day is harder than getting out of the house on a weekday. Miles never wants to wake up (that makes two of us, buddy), never wants to get dressed, never wants to brush his teeth...he … Continue reading Year 4, Day 160
Year 4, Day 147
When we left the house for Miles's dentist appointment today, my son had a simple request. "I want to see the dentist not put something in my mouth," he said. I shrugged. "Well, the dentist is going to have to put something in your mouth, buddy." Miles grappled with this for a moment. "No!" he … Continue reading Year 4, Day 147
Year 4, Day 103
"I. Want. JUICE!" Miles demanded today, skipping right over the part where he asks nicely and we suggest something else before agreeing to give him some juice. A little taken aback, I tried to remind Miles of proper etiquette when making such a request, specifically the use of the "P-word." "Miles, in this house we … Continue reading Year 4, Day 103

Year 3, Day 299
Over the course of my life, I've spent a LOT of time solving puzzles in Legend of Zelda games. As a parent, all of those finely-honed skills are both paying off and being put to their ultimate test. Tonight for instance, Miles was in what can delicately be described as "a mood." He started out … Continue reading Year 3, Day 299
