Miles may not like long walks (he always "gets tired" and demands to be carried), but show him a playground and suddenly he finds those legs once again fully functional.

Year 5, Day 75
This is a couple days late, but in addition to attending Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, we also headed down to Fort Mill, SC to visit the annual Strawberry Festival. Full disclosure, I wasn't sure what we were doing until we got there and I saw vendors, carnival rides, and (yes) a wrestling ring. … Continue reading Year 5, Day 75
Year 5, Day 53
This past weekend, in an effort to appease Miles's persistent desires to 1) go outside and 2) break the ever-loving s*** out of something, I pulled out one of his birthday gifts -- a gemstone digging set. Couple of things: 1) that slab, while soft enough to chip apart, is still pretty hard to hammer … Continue reading Year 5, Day 53
Year 4, Day 274
When coming up to visit us for Thanksgiving, my dad had only one request (and no, it wasn't "Thanksgiving dinner") -- "Find somewhere we can go on a hike." Today, after much anticipation, Papa, Miles, and I went on our nature walk at Latta Plantation Nature Preserve. All my dad really wants in life is … Continue reading Year 4, Day 274
Year 3, Day 276
We wouldn't want to bring Miles to Lake Lure and not spend some time outside. Miles couldn't wait to get out of the house. He even put "his" shoes on all by himself. His time outdoors today was divided into two opposing experiences. First, water, as Miles ran and played along Lake Lure. He can … Continue reading Year 3, Day 276
Year 3, Day 215
We all got out for a little bit today and hit up a couple parks for walking and...whatever this is. Some playground equipment is clearly designed by psychos. Perhaps the most exciting part of the excursion, however, was the time we got to spend with Miles's babysitter and the baby she is now sitting for … Continue reading Year 3, Day 215
Year 3, Day 194
With the governor loosening some COVID restrictions this past week, playgrounds have finally reopened. Miles could not be happier about it, especially considering we were headed to a park in Black Mountain this morning. TAKE ME TO THE SLIDE! After a nice walk around the lake, Miles got to experience the joys (and initial trepidation) … Continue reading Year 3, Day 194
Year 2, Day 305
Spending time at my parents' house and, more specifically, around my father, has allowed Miles to experience some things he doesn't get too much of at home. On Christmas night, we roasted marshmallows by the fire out back. Last night, Miles got to see a raccoon feeding in the backyard. Today, my dad insisted that … Continue reading Year 2, Day 305
Year 2, Day 229
Miles reads a lot of books about animals and knows most of the major animal sounds at this point, so today we thought we'd take his animal experience to a new level. We've taken him to an wildlife preserve before and his love of dogs is well-documented, but today we wanted to bring him a … Continue reading Year 2, Day 229
Year 2, Day 51
Not long ago, right after I completed work on Miles's nightmarish play center, I had a vision. Whether merely a fitful daydream or a grave vision of things to come, I am not certain. However, it was vivid and, I assume, the sort of thing that occurs to every parent watching their child play in … Continue reading Year 2, Day 51
