This morning, Jaclyn called while I was on the way in to work. She had been watering her plants when a wasp emerged and stung her hand. The pain was intense, but she drugged herself up and took a half day at work. When I picked Miles up from daycare, I said, "Do you know … Continue reading Year 3, Day 146

Year 3, Day 145
We received a shipment in a long, narrow box a couple days ago, and Miles has been extremely eager to open the package. I thought he just wanted to see what was inside, but I was a fool. Yes, what he really wanted to do was build his own porta-john. The box has taken several … Continue reading Year 3, Day 145
Year 3, Day 144
I awoke around 4:00 in the morning to the sound of Miles wailing. "MOMMY!" he cried. "MOMMMMMMMYYYYYYY!" "Can you go get him?" Jaclyn mumbled. "I've already been up with him for a long time." Maybe it was my grogginess, but Jaclyn's semi-conscious statement was met with skepticism. Nevertheless, I got out of bed and staggered … Continue reading Year 3, Day 144
Year 3, Day 143
When Miles awoke this morning, he immediately issued a decree. "Mommy! I wanna go to the ice cream shop!" We found his demand to be fair, if slightly unreasonable at 7:00 am, and so we promised that, at the end of the day, we would all go get ice cream. Miles was delighted. So delighted, … Continue reading Year 3, Day 143
Year 3, Day 142: Poop Update 12!
17) The CarrotOnce mentioned as a passing observation, this term for a long, slender, slowly emerging poo has since been adopted as a common part of Miles's poop lexicon. In Miles's words, "The Carrot" is "a big one," the completion of which must be accompanied by majestic fanfare to the tune of "doot duh-duh DOO!" … Continue reading Year 3, Day 142: Poop Update 12!
Year 3, Day 141: Name That Song 3!
While sitting on the potty this evening, Miles once again burst into song and, also once again, I have no idea what he's singing. Any ideas?
Year 3, Day 140
I heard Jaclyn pull up after picking Miles up from daycare today and walked over to the door to greet them. As I stood there watching them, unbeknownst to either of them, I overheard the following exchange. Miles: "I want animal crackers." Jaclyn: "Who said you could have animal crackers?" Miles (contemplating his answer): "...daddy."Sneaky … Continue reading Year 3, Day 140
Year 3, Day 139
When it comes to getting Miles to sit down and eat his dinner, we've grown increasingly willing to make compromises. Tonight, for instance, he insisted on sitting at the big table with us. And then he insisted on also wearing sunglasses. But he DID eat his food, so whatever works!
Year 3, Day 138
Mommy: "Well I'm going out for a little bit. Make sure Miles goes potty and takes a nap." (Miles and Daddy watch Mommy drive away.) Daddy: "Time for popcorn and DuckTales."
Year 3, Day 137
He may be young, but Miles is already developing an ear for orchestral music. Sure, his love of Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld" stems largely from its use as backing music for a couple Disney songs, but what's more heartwarming (for me anyway) is that he's already able to distinguish John Williams scores. Sure, he … Continue reading Year 3, Day 137
