Year 2, Day 361

This morning, Miles refused to leave the house without making sure Big Spider-Man was sitting in a big rocking chair and Little Spider-Man was sitting in a small one. He may only be about two years old, but he definitely treats his friends hospitably.

Year 2, Day 359

And just like that, Miles's days of clicking his tongue in affirmation seem to be behind us. He has finally added that crucial one-syllable word to his lexicon: YES. More accurately, he now says, "eeeYES." There's the slightest of wind-ups, followed by an emphatic, drawn-out pronunciation of the word, lingering on each phoneme just a … Continue reading Year 2, Day 359 →

Year 2, Day 358

The Rolling Stones are coming to Charlotte this summer, and I've been debating for the last week whether to snag a ticket. When I presented her with this quandary, Jaclyn's response was, "You can just get a ticket for yourself if you want." Now, to any reasonable man, doesn't that sound like a trap?Anyway, I … Continue reading Year 2, Day 358 →

Year 2, Day 357

I don't particularly enjoy grocery shopping. The best relationships, though, are ones where one partner makes up for the weaknesses in the other. With this in mind, I am fortunate to have a wife who, at the very least, doesn't mind grocery shopping. That's not to say I don't pull myself up by the bootstraps occasionally … Continue reading Year 2, Day 357 →

Year 2, Day 356

With today bringing more lousy weather, we decided to take Miles to Monkey Joe's in north Charlotte this evening to run off some energy and, hopefully, go to bed at a reasonable hour. Commanding his attention with a variety of games and inflatables, Monkey Joe's kept Miles more than occupied for a couple hours. While … Continue reading Year 2, Day 356 →

Year 2, Day 355

Sleepless nights, constant noise, crap (both figurative and literal) all over the floor...all some of parenthood's more challenging aspects. None, however, compare to the sheer rage manifested during the assembly of new toys. As Miles's birthday draws ever closer, so too does the barrage of exciting, large toys that I'll get to build. And wouldn't … Continue reading Year 2, Day 355 →

Year 2, Day 354

Parenthood is one part life-affirming family drama and one part horror movie. Sometimes the line between these two blurs very quickly and terrifyingly. Last night, for instance, after we had gotten home from the Valentine's Dance, I was carrying Miles when he just decided to go in for a big hug. No real reason was … Continue reading Year 2, Day 354 →

Year 2, Day 353

I picked up Miles a little early today so we could hurry home to freshen up before attending his daycare's annual Family Sweetheart Dance. I figure, why wait until middle school to toss my son into socially awkward waters? And in true Martin fashion, I can confirm that Miles has inherited the wallflower gene from … Continue reading Year 2, Day 353 →
