As noted yesterday, we went out to eat last night. It was a last-minute decision made because neither Jaclyn or I wanted to cook and it was getting late. You’ll be amazed at who wasn’t a big fan of the idea. However, Miles’s disquiet had nothing to do with wanting to stay at home and everything to do with what he wanted to eat — a can of Super Mario SpaghettiOs he had picked out from the grocery store.
Sometimes as a parent you have to make certain promises. Not bribes, necessarily…just compromises. And all too often these require you not just to think outside the box, but to pretend like the box was never there to begin with. Case in point, my bargaining with Miles last night is how this ended up happening:

Yes, that is the can of pasta in bed with him last night.
As he is wont to do, Miles climbed into our bed around 4:00 in the morning. And when Jaclyn woke up after rolling over onto something uncomfortable, she found that he had brought not only some stuffed animals with him, but the SpaghettiOs as well.
What can I say? When he’s got a bit, he really commits to it.
