I always knew this was going to be a challenge for me, but the more Miles learns to communicate the truer it is — fatherhood is a constant battle between NEEDING to act sternly and WANTING to laugh hysterically at EVERYTHING. Almost every time I say, “That isn’t funny, Miles,” or, “I’m/We’re not laughing, Miles,” it is a lie. I’m getting better at controlling myself to his face, but there are times when I can’t keep my composure. And even though I know deep down that I might be setting Miles’s behavior back three steps, in the moment it doesn’t matter. The kid is hilarious.
So much of parenthood is spent glaring at him when he’s facing us and smiling ear to ear when he isn’t.
