As is his wont, Miles casually announced, "I got a boo-boo," this afternoon. This is a nearly daily proclamation at this point, and I asked my usual follow-up. "How'd you get that one?" "From when I fell on the playground in the wood chips at school." I offered an observation. "Miles," I said, "it seems … Continue reading Year 4, Day 113
Me: "What did you learn about at school today?" Miles: "I didn't learn something at school." Either I need to reassess Miles's daycare or he's entered his teenage years a bit prematurely.
Part of my job at a learning center involved performing learning ability assessments for both prospective and current students. The battery can feel a bit intimidating, especially brand new clients whose previous experience with "testing" has been unsavory at best and a showcase of everything they're challenged with at worst. As a means to help … Continue reading Year 4, Day 77
With a gas crisis striking the East Coast this week, Jaclyn and I are trying to pare down the amount of driving we have to do, which is only relevant because it resulted in me being the one to pick Miles up after daycare yesterday, an occasion upon which I was delivered some unexpectedly clandestine … Continue reading Year 4, Day 76
Miles excitedly stepped out of daycare this afternoon to greet Jaclyn at pick-up. "Happy Mother's Day!" he said proudly, holding out the gifts he had acquired and/or created for her. Jaclyn's heart was warmed, and Miles reveled in her joy for just a moment before declaring that he wanted the gifts back.
Miles is learning about ocean life at daycare this week. The easiest way to find out about this is to ask him what the hell that thing on his head is. "It's a jellyfish."
Yesterday, Miles arrived home from daycare and said, with a sly grin, "Look what I got!" He then pulled these out of his pocket. Miles had brought these blocks home from daycare. Now, intention is everything, so I asked him, "Did you put those in your pocket on purpose or was it an accident?" "On … Continue reading Year 4, Day 54
While he isn't quite ready for his favorite TV competition show, Miles absolutely loves singing. Sometimes they're songs we can sing along to together (when he allows me to join him). Other times they're songs he's picked up at daycare that I don't know what the hell they are. This morning, he started merrily singing … Continue reading Year 4, Day 39
With the move (and the fact that it ambushed us when we flipped the calendar to April), Easter really snuck up on us this year. Miles, however, is extremely ready for a repeat visit from the Easter Bunny, as evidenced by the éclat with which he presented all of the goodies he got at his … Continue reading Year 4, Day 34
I called Jaclyn after work this evening, and she had some exciting news for me. Miles got his first homework assignment today. By her account, he had come running out of daycare this afternoon holding up a paper and happily exclaiming, "LOOK! I GOT HOMEWORK!" This is the last time I anticipate him reacting to … Continue reading Year 4, Day 5: Baby’s First Homework Assignment!
