"Look in the bathtub," Jaclyn said after I arrived home tonight. She took Miles to daycare today, and her usual morning routine had been beset by Miles's mischievousness. Knowing Miles pretty well at this point, I almost knew what to expect before I even looked in the tub. Yep, he has started moving balls from … Continue reading Year 2, Day 21

Year 2, Day 20
Before we headed back to Charlotte today, our friend Curt, having heard that Miles has an affinity for dogs, stopped by with his pet canine. Miles once again demonstrated his timidness when presented with the very thing he's been voicing desire for, maintaining a safe distance while continuing to point out that there was, in … Continue reading Year 2, Day 20
Year 2, Day 19
Miles was on the receiving end of his first birthday party last week, and today he got to help his friend Audrey celebrate her own first year of existence. The birthday girl was understandably in high demand, but Miles still got a few fleeting minutes to hang out and conspire as only barely-verbal toddlers can. … Continue reading Year 2, Day 19
Year 2, Day 18
We drove back to Myrtle Beach tonight in advance of Miles's BFF Audrey's first birthday party. Miles slept for most of the drive, which was great for us; unfortunately, he was wide awake once we got to my parents' house, especially once he noticed the plush bear doll on the bed.
Year 2, Day 17
Miles is getting better and better at playing catch, although I think his favorite part is watching me act like a total goofball.
Year 2, Day 16
Well, what Miles lacked in crying last night he more than made up for this morning, breaking into an uncharacteristic sobbing session on the way to daycare. Normally, Jaclyn passes him to me on my way out the door, we say "Bye mommy," Miles waves, and we're off to the races. Today, upon finding that … Continue reading Year 2, Day 16
Year 2, Day 15
Miles was sleeping as hard as I've ever seen him sleep when we arrived home from daycare tonight. While that meant not really getting to spend much time with him before running to my trivia show, it also meant that the transition from me to babysitter was much smoother. When he finally woke up, Lisa … Continue reading Year 2, Day 15
Year 2, Day 14
As with most things that are substantially larger than he is, Miles wasn't sure what to make of his birthday balloon, a large silver "1." He certainly loved looking at it from a distance this weekend, but bringing it close generally compelled him to turn away and try to escape from it. That changed today, … Continue reading Year 2, Day 14
Year 2, Day 13
There's a real nature vs. nurture struggle going on in our household currently. I'm content to let Miles develop at a pace he's comfortable with. Jaclyn, meanwhile, has her own ideas about deadlines for developmental milestones. One such idea that she has decided to make manifest this weekend is weaning Miles off of his bottles … Continue reading Year 2, Day 13
Year 2, Day 12
Of all the gifts Miles received for his birthday, perhaps the largest was the ball pit he received from Aunt Andrea and Uncle Scott. This nightmare apparatus has remained safely housed in its box all week, but when I woke up this morning, I found that Jaclyn had already set about preparing it for use. … Continue reading Year 2, Day 12
