Miles is typically cautious around unfamiliar people, but he’s especially nervous around my brother, his Uncle Ben. Ben has cerebral palsy and has been confined to a wheelchair for his whole life, and it’s clear every time Miles sees him that he’s never quite sure what to make of the situation.
On Thursday, Miles wouldn’t come anywhere near Ben’s room. By today, however, he was in there soon after Ben woke up, insisting that he get into his wheelchair and join the rest of us in the living room. “Ben!” he exclaimed, pointing at him and smiling. And when it came time to leave to come back to Charlotte, Miles was all hugs.
