Tonight’s the night of the Hootie & the Blowfish/Barenaked Ladies concert here in Charlotte, and so there’s been a lot of Hootie playing at home and in the car this week. While listening to some selections from Fairweather Johnson on our ride home today, I (having heard these songs many, many times) turned to Miles and tried to strike up a conversation.
“Are you doing okay, Miles? How was your day at school?”
His response was what can only be described as a “toddler snap” — he let out a quick, aggressive screech, the intent of which was unmistakeable: “DAD. SHUT IT.”
“Ah,” I said. “Do you like the song?”
He nodded silently.
Knowing he just wanted to listen to the song in peace, I left it at that and turned the music up a little bit. I think the “Oooo-la-lala”s of “Silly Little Pop Song” really resonated with him.
