Miles’s babysitter, Lisa, spends their time together communicating in two ways — sign language and German. Miles has been employing familiar signs for a while now, frequently using the motions for “food,” “milk,” “more,” “all done,” “bird,” and his new favorite, “banana.” However, as his capacity for producing phonemes has improved, so has his ability to learn new words (or close approximations of them). He now recognizes “bitte,” “essen,” “dankeshön,” and “vogel” (of course, “bird”) and is using “nein” and “da” semi-appropriately. Sure, a lot of these words correspond with English words he’s already learned, but it’s pretty cool having a trilingual 14-month-old!
