We all met at the old house after work today to pack up the last few things and say goodbye. I think Miles is starting to understand, in some way, that the new house is "home" now. He did take one last run around the porch (and check out the bird's nest) while we were … Continue reading Year 4, Day 32

Year 3, Day 111
Miles's desire for silence has gotten out of hand. When spending time outside after school today, Miles grew tired of the bird calls coming from a nearby tree. "TREE!" he shouted, cupping his hand around his mouth to maximize effect. "BE. QUIET!" I'm not sure how much luck he's going to have with that one.
Year 3, Day 99
One of the joys of Facetiming with Papa is knowing that he'll pretend to eat a bluebird egg as many times as you want him to.
Year 2, Day 226
Miles looked through the glass door and saw his babysitter approaching just after we arrived home tonight. He immediately did this: And yet, the second she mentioned going outside to look for birds, Miles embraced her, turned back to me, and said, "Bye-bye!" with a dismissive wave. Talk about mixed signals.
Year 2, Day 112
Our late night interactions with Miles typically consist of food, the occasional episode of Sesame Street, and almost always some degree of assurance that he in fact cannot see any birds right now because all the birds are asleep. Last night, Miles woke up fussing like any similar night. I stumbled out of bed to … Continue reading Year 2, Day 112
Year 2, Day 103
As detailed on this blog a number of times, Miles really likes birds. While we see plenty of birds in our backyard, we've had the benefit (?) this spring of seeing some bird families take up residence on our front porch. It's given Miles something to stare at from the front door on days when … Continue reading Year 2, Day 103
Year 2, Day 97
I finally figured out a perfect movie to put on for Miles, one that involves all of his primary interests -- birds, dogs, balls, and balloons. Any guesses?
Year 2, Day 51
Not long ago, right after I completed work on Miles's nightmarish play center, I had a vision. Whether merely a fitful daydream or a grave vision of things to come, I am not certain. However, it was vivid and, I assume, the sort of thing that occurs to every parent watching their child play in … Continue reading Year 2, Day 51
Year 2, Day 47
Yesterday was pretty rainy, and although that weather scuttled our plans to take Miles to a petting zoo today, we still tried to get a little time with animals in during our remaining time in Virginia, from the requisite bird watching... ...to introducing Miles to the majesty (and no fear public pooping) of horses. And … Continue reading Year 2, Day 47
Year 2, Day 40
Miles seems to have reached a turning point lately in his ongoing relationship with Lisa, his babysitter. Although he still fusses occasionally as we leave him on the nights when she's helping us out, he's become more and more acclimated (dare I say...enthused?) to having her there (perhaps because she almost immediately takes him outside … Continue reading Year 2, Day 40
